A successful project requires significant dialog between the designer and the owners. Discussing the intended occupants’ needs, short and longer term habitation patterns, design preferences ranging from exterior image/style through more detailed considerations (including whether the dishwasher is to the left or right of the kitchen sink), and many many other issues. Based upon this dialog, Bob presents early rough sketches of physical design approaches that may successfully respond to the owners’ requirements, all for discussion and revisions. This process can sometimes be quick but may sometimes require exploring multiple approaches and design iterations before a “correct direction” is identified. The owners need to realize that they have to invest time in this process to have a building design concept developed that will meet and hopefully enhance their immediate and long term needs.
